I am Rasuli Lewis Assistant Professor of Sociology and an Endowed Chair in Race, Racism, and Racial Justice at Bowdoin College. I am also currently a Visiting Scholar at University of Pennsylvania, Center for the Study of Ethnicity, Race, and Immigration for the Academic Year 2026-27. I earned my PhD in Sociology with an emphasis in Black Studies from  University of California Santa Barbara. 

My research and publications interrogate the role that Blackness, national origin, and immigration status play in Afro-Caribbean migrant belonging and exclusion as well as in broader immigration and border policy. 

I am currently completing my book project Black Migrants from Black Nations: Race, Blackness, and Immigrant Exclusion in South Florida as well as starting a second book project, Bordered Blackness: Racialized Migrant Surveillance and Transnational Bordering at the US-Caribbean “Third" Border.  

I have published several articles related to immigration policies and enforcement targeting Black migrants; Black politics and Black/migrant solidarities; race and capitalism; and the Caribbean. I have also published a edited volume with Philip Kretsedemas titled Modern Migrations, Black Interrogations: Revisioning Migrants and Mobilities through the Critique of Anti-Blackness.

A daughter of Jamaican immigrants who grew up in the U.S. South, I remain deeply committed to interrogating how Blackness continues to shape and be shaped by the histories of race and capitalism as well as affirming the ways Black people continue to generate their own rich histories of radical resistance and theory-making in the diaspora.
